Technological Obsolescence: Outdated Concepts in Programming
Since the first computer was created by Charles Babbage in 1822, technology has been constantly evolving. It was only furthered by Alan Turing, who planted the seed for computer science, and John Mauchly & J. Presper Eckert, who created the first electronic general-purpose digital computers in ENIAC back in 1945. Whirl the clock forward to 1973, and along strolled what is considered by most, at minimum European tech standards as we know them today, their first personal computer in the form of Micral N. Looking back at these landmarks, it’s easy to see that computers have come a long way and will only keep on improving, especially with the advent of AI. In the long run, even our current personal computers (PCs) and laptops may become a thing of the past.
The Evolution of Computers When we take a look at computers, their evolution has displayed nothing short of amazing progress. Beginning with mechanical devices and advancing to technologies that run on artificial intelligence, every generation of arresting system equipment has seen significant advancements. - Oracle 12c (Windows and Red Hat Linux) Databases Over time, where Oracle 12c databases were the backbone for database management activities everywhere, they are now being phased out by more advanced solutions in both on-premises as well as cloud-based environments.
- DOS (Disk Operating System) A no longer commonly used operating system, now replaced with more user-friendly and versatile systems that it gave way to, like Windows and macOS.
- Windows 7 A popular OS at one time, but now the support phase has ended. Instead, opt for Windows 10 and maybe future security features of Windows 11.
- Fortran The first high-level programming language, primarily for scientific and engineering applications. Although still in practice by some of those legacy systems, more and newer BS has replaced it.
- Cobol Used primarily in business, finance, and administrative systems for companies and governments, Cobol’s popularity has waned as newer languages have hit the market.
Outdated Technology Hardware Many of the hardware technologies that had been popular have now become obsolete but are still important to computer history.
- Fax Machines Once a common method of office communication, fax machines have been practically replaced by email and digital document transmission.
- Pagers In their day, pagers were the only real-time option for urgent communication (superseded by mobiles/smartphones).
- Floppy Disks and Cassette Tapes What floppy disks once ruled the land as a primary storage medium, cassette tapes were used for both data and audio storage. But these are no longer… in with something more efficient such as USB drives or digital downloads. Gone are the days where even CDs or pen drives will become outdated with cloud storage / streaming as a norm.
